Fénix at The Mountain Club — Wood Fire Above Pedregal

Cabo gets new restaurants constantly, and most of them are on the marina or the Corridor. Fénix is neither. It sits high in Pedregal, the gated hillside above Cabo San Lucas, as the restaurant inside The Mountain Club — and it is one of the few new rooms in town where the cooking is the reason to go rather than the view.

Though the view is not a small thing. Pedregal climbs the headland where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, and Fénix looks out over the point where they do.

What it is

Fénix is contemporary Mexican, built around fire. The kitchen is led by Chef César Pita, and the name is the thesis: fénix, the phoenix, rising from flame. His own framing, from the restaurant's site:

"The name Fénix symbolizes rebirth and transformation — just as fire renews, we use it to elevate every dish."

In practice that means wood-fired seafood and flame-grilled meats, with the smoke and char treated as an ingredient rather than a technique. It opened as part of The Mountain Club, the residential and membership community that began taking shape in Pedregal in 2024, and it is open to the public — you do not need to be a member or an owner to book a table.

What to order

The dishes the kitchen puts forward tell you what they care about:

• Grilled fish with clams in chorizo sofrito — the clearest expression of the fire-and-sea idea
• Birria chilaquiles — a breakfast dish treated seriously
• Mole verde with homemade tortillas — the test of any contemporary Mexican kitchen, and a fair one

There is a cocktail list and a wine list built to sit alongside the smoke rather than compete with it. Both menus are published in English and Spanish, which is worth a look before you go — this is a kitchen that rewards ordering across the table rather than one plate each.

What it costs

Mains run roughly 310 to 500 pesos — about $17 to $28 at current rates. For a new room with this kind of setting, that is restrained. Cabo has plenty of restaurants charging double for a view alone, and Fénix is not one of them. Reviewers rate it 4.7 out of 5 across more than a hundred reviews.

Budget the way you would for a proper dinner rather than a quick plate: with cocktails, a shared starter and wine, expect $70 to $110 a head.

Getting a table, and getting through the gate

Two things to know.

Reserve ahead. Fénix takes bookings through OpenTable, and the sunset seatings go first. Aim for an hour before sundown if the view is part of why you are going.

Pedregal is gated. This catches people out. The community has a staffed entrance, and you need your reservation in your own name to be cleared through — the guard will ask. If you are arriving by taxi or a driver who has not been up there before, the turn is off the west end of Cabo San Lucas and the climb is steep and narrow. Give yourself fifteen minutes more than the map suggests.

Who it suits

• A first proper night out, when the group has just landed and nobody wants the marina
• Couples — the room reads romantic without trying to
• Anyone staying in Pedregal, which makes it a five-minute drive rather than a thirty-minute one
• Guests who have done Cabo before and have already eaten at the places everyone eats at

It suits a large group less well than a table of two to six. For a party of twelve on a milestone night, we would still point you at Rosa Negra or El Farallón and save Fénix for a quieter evening earlier in the week.

If you are staying in Pedregal

Fénix is a short drive from most of the houses we place guests in on that hillside — Villa Peñasco, Villa Las Palmas, Villa Estrella, Sunrise Villa, Casa Finisterra and Villa Di Mare are all inside the same gates. It is the rare Cabo restaurant our Pedregal guests can reach without going down the hill and back up again at midnight.

A serious wood-fire kitchen, in a setting most new restaurants would coast on, at prices that have not caught up with the address. Book the sunset seating, put the reservation in your own name for the gate, and order across the table.
